Tériade and Greek Artists

Tériade also created a significant collection consisting of works by known artists. The museum he donated to the island of Lesvos, his birthplace, hosts part of this remarkable collection, mostly including works by Greek artists, as for example Giannis Tsarouchis, Orestis Kanellis, George Vakirtzis and other painters, all representing modern trends of their era.

Moreover, Tériade introduced us to Theophilos and acknowledged him as a genuine exponent of folk art. Tériade was the person highlighting that Theophilos’ paintings encapsulate the byzantine tradition of fresco, the past and the colour of Greek art. Theophilos, who could be characterized as a “national folk painter” would have remained unknown without Tériade and his works would have forever been lost.
