Artists

Tériade assembled a remarkable collection of works by renowned artists. A portion of this important collection is housed in the museum he donated to his birthplace on the island of Lesvos. It consists primarily of works by Greek artists, including Yiannis Tsarouchis, Orestis Kanellis, Giorgos Vakirtzis, and several other painters, all of whom represent the contemporary artistic movements of their time.

Moreover, Tériade was the person who introduced Theophilos to a wider audience and recognized him as an authentic representative of Greek folk art. He was the one who highlighted the fact that Theophilos's paintings embodied the Byzantine tradition of mural painting, while also reflecting the past and the distinctive colours of Greek artistic expression. It can be said that Theophilos—who may justifiably be described as Greece's "national folk painter"—would have remained unknown without Tériade, and that his artistic legacy might otherwise have been lost forever.
