WORKSHOP ON THE THEME:

“Museums as a place to promote research and education, the case of the
Museum – Library Stratis Eleftheriadis – Tériade

Given the continuous development of new data in cultural areas concerning the use of technologies and the building of the information society, Greece, as a member state of the EU, is actively involved in the developing environment of new technologies and their applications in museums. In the spirit of contemporary cultural facts, the Tériade Museum is organizing a Workshop on the theme: “Museums as a place to promote education and research, the case of the Museum-Library Tériade”.

The Museum-Library Stratis Eleftheriadis- Tériade is the first museum of modern art to operate in Greece and was inaugurated in August 1979. It is a donation of Tériade to his hometown of Mytilene and houses, preserves and displays a large and rare collection of artworks, with engravings by the greatest modernist artists of the 20th century, at the height of their creativity, but also by well-known Greek painters such as Tsarouchis, Theophilos, etc. It is also collaborating with museums in Greece and France such as the Matisse Museum and the MUCEM, Museum of the Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean.

Despite the fact of being a poet, a painter, an art critic and an editor of high sensitivity and quality, the founder of the Museum, Stratis Eleftheriadis Tériade, a wealthy Greek of Diaspora, became more established in the international artistic community of the modernist movement in Paris, as the unique animator and inspirer of the unprecedented phenomenon of bringing poets and artists together in an unprecedented combination of words and images. The unique combination of text and image in the Tériade Museum exhibits is reflected in the works of Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Alberto Giacometti, Le Corbusier, Fernand Léger, etc., all of whom were inspired by the Greek culture and some of whom had visited Greece.
